black tape for a blue girl

other 10 Neurotics interviews

Second interview: Gothic City A Ukranian Magazine | May 18 2009
This is the full interview in English

Q: What was your favourite toy in your childhood?

Sam: From what I can recall, it was a toy monkey. About 8" tall with brownish fur. Name: "Monkey."

Q: You've just released the new album. Are your hopes completely justified?

If you are asking me if my hopes are fulfilled, then yes, A Retrospective did what I wanted it to do, which is to bring together a collection of the most popular tracks from black tape for a blue girl.

Q: If you close your eyes, relax and imagine that you're far away from here, what would you see with closed eyes?

Waterfalls. The ocean. Lots of nudity. No drama.

Q: Please, imagine that 10 Neurotics is a picture. What have you painted on it?

Many really intense and crazy people, slowly imploding.

Q: How does it feel when inspiration is coming? Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get my inspiration from the people I know. A situation occurs and it feels like something I want to analyze, embellish, capture for others to see. I think inspiration feels frustrating, most of the time; it doesn't come quickly and naturally. It is a battle. Occasionally, a song will come very organically without trouble, such as "Rotten Zurich Cafe." Most other times it can be like pulling your own tooth for a year or two, like with "Inch Worm."

Q: What does your guardian angel on your shoulder look like? Is it black or white?

I think the angel looks like a clown; whenever I take anything too seriously, it makes a squeaky little noise to remind me that life is a joke and meant to be taken very lightly. Less anguish, less drama. Intensity is fine, but it all doesn't matter one way or another, anyway. Black or white? Maybe half and half. That seems right.

Thanks for the interview. Be on alert for 10 Neurotics, which is to be released in Russia in August on Shadowplay Records. All my best, Sam
